Piping Plover Made of Recycled Sweaters

This week Upcycled by Ash is hosting an auction to benefit the National Wildlife Federation and their efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. Today marks the one year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent oil spill in the Gulf. The ecosystems in and surrounding the Gulf of Mexico are still being affected by the disaster and will be for years to come.

Piping Plover by Wandering Needles.
This adorable handmade Piping Plover is one of my favorite craft donations to the auction. He is so cute!

The Piping Plover was handmade by Michell Fahmy of Wandering Needles. Michelle chose to make a Piping Plover for the auction because it is one of the bird species that was drastically impacted by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

This life size sculpture has a $45 value. It is almost 100% upcycled! Only the thread and a small amount of sculpting wire in the legs and tail were purchased new. The materials used for the bird came from scraps of three different second-hand sweaters and from one men's orange cotton shirt. Michelle created the pattern and assembled the final piece with a combination of machine and hand sewing.

It is so inspiring to see all the amazing eco-friendly and upcycled items that were donated to the auction. If you haven't been to the auction yet, what are you waiting for? You don't even have to leave your house, just follow this link- http://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.203155696383555.51473.143109902388135

Auction to Benefit the National Wildlife Federation and HUGE GIVEAWAY!

Alyssa Milano

Upcycled By Ash is proud to announce our online auction for the National Wildlife Federation. We've gathered a group of talented and compassionate crafters to contribute to our effort to raise funds for NWF, and to  recognize the environmental destruction that took place in the Gulf of Mexico one year ago.

This week marks the anniversary of the devastating oil rig explosion and spill that swept the gulf, poisoning the environment and the wildlife inhabiting it. A heart breaking number of animals lost their lives and countless were severely injured and displaced. Sadly, animals residing in the gulf are still appearing covered in oil today. These innocent creatures are paying the price for human error and destruction.

Actress Alyssa Milano, a genuine supporter of the NWF and its efforts, donated her jeans to Upcycled by Ash to be recycled and used for our cause. Ash upcycled two pairs of Alyssa's pants into eco-friendly bags which are available for bidding in the auction, alongside the many other beautifully handcrafted items donated by passionate crafters.

The Upcycled by Ash auction to benefit the National Wildlife Federation will run from Sunday April 17 through Saturday April 23 on the Upcycled by Ash facebook page.

Uncle Bob and His Books

Children's Books by Uncle Bob
Items for the auction to benefit the National Wildlife Federation have started to arrive at my doorstep. It is very exciting and inspirational to see these items and to hear the stories behind them. The two children's books from "Uncle Bob" are my favorite donations so far.

The story behind Uncle Bob and his children's books is truly inspirational. Uncle Bob has a passion for the poor and orphaned children of China. He wrote two books, When I Was a Little Boy I Caught a Rabbit and When I Was a Little Boy I played in a Hayloft. Both books are written in English with the Chinese translation printed below.

The most remarkable part of Uncle Bob's books is the illustrations. Both books have been illustrated by school children in China. Uncle Bob read his stories to the kids and then asked them to make the drawings to go with his stories. He also paid each child $25 for their picture. The result is wonderfully rich and meaningful beyond the story.

The proceeds from Uncle Bob's books go to Threshold Ministries, INC (TMI) a Christian non-profit based in California. TMI and their Hope House for Children, located in Jilin Province, care for the area's poor, orphaned, and abandoned children.

Thank you Uncle Bob, for sharing your passion with us and for helping us spread awareness and raise funds for the National Wildlife Federation.

Calling all Eco Friendly Crafters

Upcycled by Ash is planning an online auction to benefit the National Wildlife Federation. If you are an eco friendly crafter who cares about animals and the environment, consider joining the cause.

The anniversary of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster is approaching. In recognition of the environmental destruction caused by the spill, Ucycled by Ash will be running an online auction to raise funds for the National Wildlife Federation, an organization that was pivotal to the animal rescue efforts in the Gulf.

We are looking for crafters who use upcycled, recycled and/or eco friendly material to donate items for the auction. Items of all sorts are welcome for both the auction and the giveaway that will run along side the auction. Donations for the giveaway segment do not have to be upcycled/eco friendly.

This is an excellent opportunity for crafters with online businesses to get their shops and items promoted. We expect the auction to draw in a lot of traffic and we have developed a comprehensive plan for promotion of the auction and the artists involved.

View the details/guidelines for submitting a donation - http://upcycledbyash.blogspot.com/p/nwf-crafter-details.html

I will personally be donating three upcycled bags to the auction, two made from actress Alyssa Milano’s pants (Who’s the Boss, Charmed) and one made from actor Keith Powell’s pants (30 Rock). I am also donating an upcycled clutch to be included with the giveaway package.
